About this Research Project
My NATTRESS surname had always been a mystery to me. As I child in California, I had never met any other families who shared my last name. When I was in college, I received a phone call from a woman in Utah who wanted to know if we were related! I honestly could not answer her question beyond my grandparents names. The family history was a mystery. Well, now I am happy to say that I know a bit more about my family surname. So, --- sorry to that nice lady from Utah, but it appears that we are not directly related after all, -- but our ancestors lived about 5 miles from each other circa 1780. Twenty years later, my research was inspired by a letter written to my sister by our great aunt Nina NATTRESS COLBATH. She had over the years lovingly collected names and dates and compiled them into a short family history. Lucky for me, she had chosen the best family member to trust this information to. My sister is a 'saver'. I am an amateur genealogist but have attempted to apply standards for sound genealogical research recommended by the National Genealogical Society. Most individuals have been added to this database only after confirmation with a primary or secondary source. Some individuals have been included hypothetically, pending further research. I have also attempted to correctly cite as much as I can, but I seem to always be a bit behind on this. Some lines have been more extensively researched than others, --- but this is a work in progress. I have
connected with many great cousins around the globe who have helped
along the way. Happily, the Internet has shortened the miles. A
part of this database contains information on the
Australian lines researched by the effervescent Lauren HANNAH, and the
Canadian lines by the scholarly Valerie ROBERTSON, who both kindly shared their
research with me. I have
attempted to give them proper credit in the citations. I would like to personally thank my fellow NATTRASS researchers; Bonita HOFFMEISTER, Ann LAWLER, Brett WILHELM, Alida NATTRESS, Valerie ROBERTSON, Audrey CRITCHLEY, Dorothy SMART and especially Lauren HANNAH for her incredible ingenuity, patience and talent. Thank you! Future Research
It is my goal to continue researching the blacklisted miners and their families in the United States and Australia as well as their families in Allendale and other areas as they spread out in the northeast of England, and immigrated to the United States, Australia and Canada. We hope that by placing this database online, that we can connect with other family researchers and historians and continue to add to this database.
