Additional Information

Jacob NATTRASS:

Research Notes:
Emigration from England: Jacob Nattrass age 45, departed from Liverpool, England on May 22, 1849 on the maiden voyage of the emigrant ship Guy Mannering. The Capitan was William Edwards. With him was his wife Margaret age 35, children; Thomas age 11, Hannah age 9 John age 6, Ann age 3, and Jacob age 9m. Also traveling in the family group was Thomas Nattrass his nephew. They arrived in New York harbor on June 28th, 1849. Of the 818 passengers, 34 died during the 36 day voyage.

Most of the passengers were Irish, but 58 (including Jacob) were lead miners and their families from the Allendale area of Northumberland, England, who had been blacklisted following an industrial dispute. The intended destination of these lead miners was the lead mining areas of south western Wisconsin and north western Illinois. Jacob and his family settled in Shullsburg, Wisconsin, a booming lead mining community in southwest part of the state. Within 10 years of his arrival in the US, he had saved enough money to retire from mining and purchase a farm in Gratiot township in the same county.

Jacob had tenant farmed previously in Allendale to supplement his mining income there, so after spending most of his life working underground, farming again and full time in the open air and sunlight must have been a different world for him. He and his sons worked the farm and grew wheat & corn and had cattle and sheep in the rich pasture lands. His children attended the local school and prospered. He and his wife Margaret remained on the farm in Gratiot for the remainder of the their lives. His son John continued to farm there until his mother's passing in 1892 and he sold the property to his neighbor and moved to Kewanee, Illinois to live with his sister Hannah and her husband Henry Bennison. Jacob, Margaret and their son John are buried at West Ella Cemetery about 3 miles from their farm in Gratiot.

A short time after coming here her husband died and for the past two years the only occupant of the house was herself and son, John, who was with her when she passed away. Six children survive her, the eldest, Thomas, having died two years ago. All but one attended the funeral. There are two daughters and four sons, John, who resides here, Jacob, Joseph and William of Sheffield, Iowa, Mrs. Hannah Bennison of Kewanee, Ill. and Mrs. Annie Matson of Storm Lake. (01) Thomas NATTRASS:

Research Notes:
Thomas' christening record indicated that he was born out of wedlock. His parents later married in 1839.

Excerpt from The Nattress Family History by Nina Colbath

"Left Wisconsin (sic before 1870) and went to California to prospect for gold. The last letter received by the family was mailed from Placerville. No trace of him was ever found. We presumed that as many prospectors, he had died of exposure or Indians. And many old timers just disposed of by whom?"

(03) John NATTRASS:

Research Notes:
Excerpt form the Nattress Family History by Nina Colbath

"A bachelor, he made many trips back to Northumberland to visit relatives. He lived his last years with his brother Joseph in Storm Lake."
