Phoebe MIDCALF:

Research Notes:
Both Phoebe & her cousin Joseph Midcalf who were illegitimate children of the two Midcalf sisters Ann & Elizabeth were both christened on Christmas day 1819 as older children. Joseph was 13 & Phoebe was 8 years old. Maybe the Minister and or families came to some resolution about the two children's out of wedlock births and in the spirit of the celebration of Christ's birthday, they had them christened together.

Research Notes:
Obituary of John Reed, unknown newspaper, from Ancestry.com tree entitled Thomas Spicer, owner Jim Buss, e-mail: jrprint@juno.com, posted 01 November 2001

John Reed, son of Joseph and Phoebe Reed, was born November 25,1835, in Cumberland Parish, Cornwall, England. He died at Edmund, WI November 7,1921, age 86 years lacking but a few days. He came to this country with his parents when he was but 12 years of age. The family settled for a time at Vineger Hill, near Galena, IL, but finally located in Iowa County. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ann Spicer August 16,1858, and settled on a farm 7 miles north of Edmund, where they remained until their removed to the village of Edmund 23 years ago. To this union seven children were born, two of whom preceded the parents to the grave - John Henry, who died in infancy, Esther, wife of Fred Anding, who passed away in 1903. Mrs Reed also preceded her husband to the grave March 6,1921. Those left to mourn the loss of Mr Reed are Mary Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Ward of Edmund; Phoebe Harriet, wife of J.B. Sampson, Edmund; Joseph William of Mosinee; Margaret, wife of Wm. Dickinson, Highland; and Walter James of Woodburn, Oregon. Also two brothers Walter and Jesse both of Edmund, and one sister, Margaret Sullivan of Mineral Point. There are also 16 prandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Of the personal character of Mr Reed we need say but a few words. He joined the Methodist Episcopal church over 50 years ago and has remained a consistant member ever since. His whole life was fragrant with sweetness; he was beloved by all; to know him was a benediction and a blessing. Funeral services were held at 1:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at Edmund Methodist church, conducted by Rev. G.W. Vaughn of Linden and Rev. E. Evans of Cuba City.

cause of death: nephritis,
